An electric choke completely relieves the driver of the annoying work of choke operation, which is why they are also integrated in almost all modern vehicles ex works if they do not already have an injection system.

The technology in these small black boxes is kept relatively simple.

The basic position of the choke is generally always on `activated`, i.e. the choke is in the position in which the carburettor receives more fuel than usual so that it can start well.

As soon as a current is applied, which is only the case as soon as the engine is started, an internal coil is heated by the current. This heat is transferred to a so-called expansion wax. This wax lives up to its name and expands. At the same time it pushes the connected choke piston into the carburettor, thus ending the choke function. The whole thing takes place within a period of a few minutes, so it has nothing to do with a spontaneous magnetic switch function or similar.

Unfortunately, this delayed function is also one of the disadvantages of the electric choke.

Because it is not intelligently controlled, it does not know whether the engine is already warm or not.

Therefore, when the engine is stopped, the power supply to the choke is also deactivated. The contained wax cools down again and, depending on the length of the driving break, the engine gets as much fuel as if it was cold, although it is still well warmed and would start wonderfully without this supporting fuel shower.
Therefore, now you have to accelerate to start the engine to get a sign of life from his engine. This is one reason why it can make sense to convert to a manual choke. This measure can easily reduce the fuel consumption of short distance drivers by one liter per 100km.

Frequently the coil burns out inside the electric choke, then the engine starts perfectly, but dies off again and again in warm condition because it gets too much fuel.

Testing you can check every E-Choke by simply connecting it to any 12V power source, no matter if DC or AC.

If the piston does not extend visibly even after a few minutes, the choke must be replaced.

This item has a piaggio-specific connector and can be used on all Dell`Orto and Arreche carburettors with a device for an electric choke.
